About Lucid Dungeon
A private home for the characters you invent. Write one, open a conversation, and pick it up whenever you like — it remembers where you left off. Replies run on the app’s own OpenRouter account: 10 messages are free, and Pro adds 200 a day, group chats, replies read aloud and character galleries.
v4.4.0is the version you are running.

v4.4.0Current5 November 20265 changes
Shared chats: talk with your friends and the characters you each bring, in one room.
Added
- Shared chats. On Pro you can start one, add people from your friends, and each person can bring their own characters into it.
- A character in a shared chat answers when somebody mentions them with @, and that reply counts against the allowance of whoever mentioned them.
- Everyone in a shared chat sees new messages and replies as they happen, and sees when a character is replying.
- Anybody you add can join a shared chat on either plan, leave it whenever they like, and take their characters with them.
Changed
- The Friends page is a table that shows the shared chats you are in with each friend, and lets you start a new one with them in a single step.
v4.3.14 November 20264 changes
A new look for the scene, and a quieter chat panel.
Changed
- The scene at the top of a chat is a tag in two tones of your theme colour, and when the story moves somewhere new the old place scrolls out as the new one scrolls in.
- Hovering over the scene, or tapping it on a phone, shows the whole of it, so a long scene cut short on a small screen can still be read.
- The Settings tab in the chat panel shows each setting by name alone, without a description under every one.
Fixed
- The chat panel no longer has two buttons for putting it away while it is open.
v4.3.04 November 20267 changes
A panel beside every chat shows who is in it, how the story has gone, what the character still remembers, and the chat's settings.
Added
- A chat now has a side panel, opened and closed from the button at the end of the chat's top-right controls. On a wide screen it stands beside the chat as the sidebar does on the left, and stays open or closed on that device as you left it. On a narrow screen it slides over the chat instead.
- The Character tab shows the character's portrait and how they feel now, with buttons to edit them, open their gallery, add someone to the chat, or start a new chat, and lists your other chats with them. In a group it lists everyone with their mood and a button to remove them, and lets you choose who replies next.
- The gallery opens inside the panel, as a grid of the character's pictures and one picture at a time, with previous and next buttons and the arrow keys. Its pictures load only when you open it. Adding and removing pictures stays on the gallery page, a button away.
- The Story tab says how much of the chat the character still remembers, for example "Mira sees the last 100 of 141 turns", and while the panel is open a line in the chat marks where that memory begins.
- The Story tab also lists each change of scene and each character's moods from earlier to now. Tapping one scrolls the chat to the reply it came from. It also shows when the chat started, how many turns it has, and how many replies you have left.
- The Settings tab gathers the chat's thinking level, voice, spoken-sentences-only switch, the suggested replies, mood and scene switches, and find, rename, export, archive and delete.
Changed
- While the panel stands beside the chat, the message box keeps only the speaker choice, and the button for adding someone moves from the top of the chat into the panel.
v4.2.24 November 20262 changes
The phone menu keeps your plan and Settings in reach on short screens.
Fixed
- On a phone, or in the installed app, the menu no longer pushes your plan and Settings off the bottom of a short screen; the list of characters and chats scrolls above them instead.
- In the installed app, the menu no longer sits under the status bar or the home indicator.
v4.2.14 November 20266 changes
The Character Library, your collections and what is shared with you now look and work as one place.
Added
- The Character Library, Your collections and Shared with you have a row of tabs at the top, each with how many it holds, so the other two are always one press away.
- Opening a chat now eases it into place instead of it appearing all at once. Anyone who has asked their device for less motion gets a short fade instead.
Changed
- In the sidebar, Library, Your collections and Shared with you sit together under a Collections heading. Friends has moved up beside New group chat.
- Shared with you shows collections first, then characters, and leaves out a section with nothing in it. When nothing has been shared with you yet, it says so once and offers the Character Library.
- A collection card without a cover gives each face drawn with initials a colour of its own, so four people no longer read as one coloured band.
- Hovering a collection card now brings its picture closer, as a character card does, instead of raising a shadow. Neither kind of card underlines its name any more, and a picture of initials alone stays still on both.
v4.2.04 November 20265 changes
A picture you link to is now saved with the character, so nobody else's browser is sent to the site it came from.
Changed
- When you give a character's picture as a link, the picture is downloaded once when you save and kept like an uploaded one. The link itself is not stored, so people who see the character in the library or through a share no longer load anything from that site.
- A picture link has to start with https://. A link that does not lead to a PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF picture, or to a public website, is refused with a message under the link, and nothing is saved.
- A linked picture larger than 1.4 MB is refused with a suggestion to upload it instead, where it is made smaller for you. A linked picture now takes one of the character's ten picture spaces, as an upload does.
- Typing a link in the picture dialog replaces the uploaded picture when you save, and the preview shows the linked picture straight away.
- Importing a chat downloads the pictures its characters link to in the same way. A link that cannot be used, or one starting with http://, leaves that character with initials rather than stopping the import.
v4.1.14 November 20261 change
A tidier way of keeping your appearance settings, with nothing to notice.
Changed
- The typeface, colour theme, plain background and stats settings are now kept by one piece of code instead of four. They look, save and carry between tabs exactly as before.
v4.1.04 November 20262 changes
Pictures are now stored with Supabase in Mumbai, and uploading works again.
Changed
- Portraits, chat backgrounds, gallery pictures and collection covers are now stored with Supabase in Mumbai, next to the app and its database.
Fixed
- Pictures that had stopped loading are gone rather than shown broken. Characters show their initials until a new picture is uploaded.
v4.0.14 November 20262 changes
Character pictures are now stored in Mumbai, next to the app and its database.
Changed
- Uploading a picture, using a gallery picture as a portrait, and adding an official character from the library are quicker, because pictures are no longer stored in the United States.
- The first time a picture is shown it loads sooner, for the same reason.
v4.0.02 November 20268 changes
Lucid Dungeon now runs in Mumbai, and pages, chats and menus respond noticeably faster.
Changed
- The app and its database moved from Singapore to Mumbai, so pages that read a lot load faster from India.
- The Privacy Policy now says your information is kept with Supabase in Mumbai, India.
- Clicking a link shows the page's outline straight away instead of waiting for the whole page.
- Opening a new chat goes straight to it, and hiding, archiving or deleting something takes it off the screen at once.
- Searching your chats with Ctrl-K finds the ones already on the sidebar as you type.
- Dialogs, menus and the composer open and close more quickly, and replies appear more smoothly as they stream in.
Fixed
- An account signed in before switching accounts existed can be switched back to after adding a second one.
- Screen readers no longer read out a character's initials when their picture is showing.
v3.18.02 November 20264 changes
Collections in the Character Library can be reported, and taken out of it.
Added
- A collection in the Character Library that is not yours has a Report button, and each of its characters a flag. Pick a reason, add anything you want to, and the administrators are told. Its author is never told who reported it, and you can report a collection once.
- Administrators have a Library queue under Reports, where a reported collection can be unpublished with a note to its owner, and its owner allowed to publish it again later.
Changed
- A collection an administrator unpublished stays private until they allow it back. Its owner is emailed, can still edit, share and delete it, and sees why its publish switch is locked.
- The Privacy Policy now says what a report about a collection keeps, and that its owner is emailed if it is taken out of the library.
v3.17.12 November 20262 changes
The installed app's status bar now matches the page under it.
Changed
- The navigation bar at the bottom of the installed app now matches the dark background exactly. Android sets that colour when the app is installed, so it stays dark in light mode.
Fixed
- In the installed app, the bar at the top of the screen now takes the colour of the page, whichever of light, dark and the colour themes you have chosen. It used to follow the phone's own light or dark setting, so a phone in dark mode showed a dark strip above the app in light mode.
v3.17.01 November 20261 change
Sign-in codes by email arrive reliably again.
Fixed
- A sign-in code email could fail with "The code could not be sent" when another person had been sent the same six-digit code that day. Each code email is now sent on its own, so this no longer happens.
v3.16.031 October 20262 changes
Collections can have a cover picture.
Added
- A collection can have a cover picture, set in its Edit details dialog. Its card shows the cover in place of the first four faces, in Your collections, the Character Library and Shared with you.
- Lucid Dungeon's own collections can have a cover too, set from the admin collections page.
v3.15.030 October 20261 change
Group chats on a phone now show a background: whoever spoke last, changing as the next character starts to reply.
Added
- On a phone, a group chat shows the background of whoever spoke most recently, and fades to the next character's as they start to reply. Phones used to show no background in a group at all, because splitting a narrow screen between several pictures left each one too thin to read as a place.
v3.14.030 October 20263 changes
A sign-in link can no longer send you to another site, a payment can no longer buy Pro twice, and replies start a little sooner.
Changed
- Replies start a little sooner. The app makes two fewer trips to its database before it asks the model to write.
Fixed
- A sign-in link whose return address hid another website behind a tab or line break could send you to that site once you had signed in. Signing in now always brings you back to Lucid Dungeon.
- Deleting an account no longer frees the UPI transaction IDs it entered, so the same payment cannot be claimed for Pro again from a new account. The Privacy Policy now says what is kept: a one-way hash of each ID, and nothing else.
v3.13.129 October 20261 change
"Spoken sentences only" no longer reads a stage direction aloud because it has a bold word in it.
Fixed
- With "Spoken sentences only" on, a stage direction with a bold word in it, such as *She steps back, **clutching** her skirt.*, was read aloud. It is now skipped like any other narration, matching how the chat draws it.
v3.13.029 October 20262 changes
Find words anywhere in a conversation and jump straight to them.
Added
- Find in chat, in the conversation menu, searches everything said in the conversation, including turns you have not scrolled back to, and lists the matches newest first with who said them and when.
- Choosing a match loads the conversation back to that turn, brings it into view and highlights the words. Enter steps to the next older match, Shift+Enter to the next newer one, and Escape closes find.
v3.12.029 October 20262 changes
Every chat in one list, and spoken-only reading that skips actions running over two lines.
Added
- An All chats page lists every chat you have not archived, the most recent first, so older chats no longer need a search to find. Open it from the link under Recent chats once the sidebar is full, or from Ctrl-K.
Fixed
- With "spoken sentences only" on, an action in asterisks that runs onto a second line is no longer read aloud.
v3.11.029 October 20263 changes
Unsent messages stay put, long messages are stopped before sending, and sign-in codes wait a moment before another can be asked for.
Added
- Text you have typed but not sent is kept for each chat, so leaving the chat, reloading or switching chats no longer loses it. It stays until you send it or close the tab.
Changed
- The message box stops at 32,000 characters, the most a message can hold, and says how much room is left once you are close.
- After a sign-in code is sent, "Send another" counts down thirty seconds before it can be pressed again.
v3.10.029 October 20262 changes
Search can take you places now, and a chat background can go without its faded edges.
Added
- Ctrl K (⌘K on a Mac) now lists actions above your characters and chats: go to any page in the sidebar, start a new character or a group chat, switch between light and dark, or open the Pro plan. Each answers to other words for it too, so typing "account" finds Settings.
- A character's chat background has a Vignette switch beside Strength, Blur and Zoom. Turn it off to show the picture without the fade of the panel's colour over its top and bottom edges. It stays on for every background that already exists.
v3.9.029 October 20264 changes
Sign-in keeps less about you, and the limit on replies a minute holds.
Changed
- A sign-in code sent by email is now stored only as a one-way hash, so it cannot be read back out of the database while it waits to be used.
- The sign-in tokens Google issues are no longer kept. Lucid Dungeon asks Google nothing after you sign in, so they are dropped at every sign-in, and the ones stored before have been cleared.
- The Privacy Policy now says what is kept for each way of signing in.
Fixed
- The limit of thirty replies a minute now holds when many requests arrive at once. Before, requests sent together could all get past it.
v3.8.029 October 20262 changes
The Free plan's ten messages are counted once per email address, even across a deleted account.
Changed
- The Privacy Policy now says that, after an account is deleted, how many free messages it used is kept under a one-way hash of its email address until an account with that address is made again.
Fixed
- Deleting your account and signing up again with the same email address no longer starts the Free plan's ten messages over; the new account carries on from what the old one had used.
v3.7.028 October 20261 change
Renaming a chat keeps it where it was in your recent chats.
Changed
- Renaming a chat no longer moves it to the top of your recent chats, so an old conversation stays in its place after you give it a new title.
v3.6.028 October 20265 changes
Select and manage multiple characters at once on the dashboard and in the Character Library.
Added
- Pick multiple characters on the dashboard with Select to delete them together, or start a chat or group chat seated in the order they were picked.
- Take multiple characters from a Character Library collection at once with Add all or Select.
Changed
- Arrange mode no longer shows a line of instructions above your characters, so the cards stay where they are.
- A collection holds up to 20 characters.
- A collection's page puts Select and Add all beside its title, so the characters start higher up.
v3.5.328 October 20262 changes
Lucid Dungeon's own characters can now come with a chat background.
Added
- Characters from Lucid Dungeon's collections can have a chat background, and adding one from the library gives you your own copy of it along with their gallery.
- Admins can see how many pictures each character's gallery holds from the cards on a Lucid Dungeon collection's page.
v3.5.228 October 20261 change
Browsers no longer report a security policy warning on every page.
Fixed
- Pages no longer send a security policy report each time a form or chat check loads, so real problems are easier to see.
v3.5.128 October 20261 change
A security update to signing in.
Fixed
- Signing in now runs on a newer version of the library behind it, which closes two flaws that could have let somebody sign in to another person's account.
v3.5.028 October 20262 changes
Arrange your characters in the order you want, and see each one's gallery count on their card.
Added
- Characters on the dashboard can be put in any order. Press Arrange beside the Characters heading, drag the cards where you want them (or hold one on a phone, or use the keyboard), and press Done. The sidebar lists them in the same order.
- A character's card on the dashboard shows how many pictures their gallery holds, beside the number of conversations they are in.
v3.4.027 October 20264 changes
Galleries for Lucid Dungeon's own characters, and a character limit for each plan.
Added
- Lucid Dungeon's own characters can have a gallery. Administrators add pictures from the character's admin page, and anybody who adds the character from the library gets their own copy of them, on either plan.
- Free keeps up to 3 characters and Pro up to 20. The dashboard shows how many you have of how many your plan keeps, and says what to do once you reach it.
Changed
- A character's picture and chat background now count toward their ten gallery spaces when they were uploaded straight into place, and are shown in the gallery, where they can be removed. One chosen from the gallery takes no second space.
- An account with more characters than its plan keeps, such as one whose Pro has ended, keeps every one of them but cannot add another until it is under the limit.
v3.3.027 October 20266 changes
Sign in to more than one account in the same browser and switch between them from the account menu.
Added
- The account menu lists every account signed in on this browser, up to five, and switches to another with one press.
- Add account signs in to another account without signing out of the one you are in. Google asks which of your Google accounts to use.
- Each account in the menu has its own sign-out button, and Sign out of all accounts signs every one of them out at once.
- Administrators' accounts are marked with an Admin badge in the account menu.
Changed
- Deleting your account now carries on in another account signed in on the same browser, instead of signing every account out.
- A tab left open on one account reloads when you come back to it after switching accounts in another tab, so nothing you do there lands in the wrong account.
v3.2.327 October 20262 changes
Failures on our side are now reported so they can be found and fixed, and the Privacy Policy says where those reports go.
Changed
- When something fails on our side, a report goes to Sentry so it can be found and fixed. It says which part of the app failed and never includes anything you wrote.
- The Privacy Policy now names Sentry, says what its error reports contain, and is dated 27 October 2026.
v3.2.227 October 20263 changes
Long lists of chats open quickly, and a used-up allowance is described the same way everywhere.
Changed
- The archive and each character's page show thirty chats at a time, with a Show more button for the rest, so they stay quick however many chats build up.
Fixed
- A chat whose free messages are used up now says the same thing before you send as it does when a reply is refused.
Removed
- The one-off command that moved old character pictures into storage is gone, since every picture has been moved.
v3.2.127 October 20262 changes
A security update: nothing you use changes.
Fixed
- The app now runs on a version of Next.js with fixes for serious security flaws, including two that could let somebody run code on the server without signing in.
- Two libraries the app relies on, for checking input and for making requests, were updated past flaws that could let an oversized request slow the app down or stop it answering.
v3.2.027 October 20263 changes
The Telegram bot answers again, and testing can no longer take it offline.
Changed
- Development now has a Telegram bot of its own, so testing the bot on a laptop can no longer take the live one off the air.
- Pointing the bot at a deployment now checks first that the deployment will accept it, and refuses an address that redirects, since Telegram does not follow redirects.
Fixed
- The Telegram bot answers messages again, /start included, after a stretch in which it received nothing.
v3.1.226 October 20262 changes
Housekeeping: nothing you use changes.
Changed
- Every route that serves a character picture now sets its private caching rule in one place, so a new route cannot mark a picture as safe for shared caches by mistake.
Removed
- Two one-off maintenance scripts that had already run everywhere: the one that first filled this changelog and roadmap, and the one that brought accounts over from the old sign-in provider.
v3.1.024 October 20265 changes
Pro accounts can now chat with their characters from Telegram.
Added
- Connect Telegram from Settings, and chat with your characters from the Telegram app. Replies appear as they are written, with the speaker's name on each.
- Group chats work on Telegram too, with the next speaker chosen as in the app.
- The bot's commands: /chats to pick up a chat, /new to start one with a character, /who, /regen to retake the last reply, /plan, /unlink and /help.
- Suggested replies appear as buttons under each reply. Pressing one puts it in the message box for you to edit or send.
Changed
- The Privacy Policy now describes what is kept when you connect Telegram, and what Telegram receives.
v3.0.122 October 20262 changes
Sign-in codes by email can no longer be sent to one address over and over.
Changed
- An email address can be sent at most five sign-in codes an hour. Past that, the sign-in card says so and suggests continuing with Google.
Fixed
- The limit on how often a sign-in code can be requested now holds across the whole app, rather than separately on each server.
v3.0.022 October 20264 changes
Characters in long chats keep answering, and no reply costs more than a set amount to write.
Added
- Administrators can set, per model, how many tokens of history each reply is sent, beside how many messages.
Changed
- In chats with very long messages, characters may remember fewer of the earliest ones. Chats of ordinary length are not affected.
Fixed
- A chat full of very long messages no longer stops answering for good. Each reply is now written from as many of the newest messages as the model can hold, rather than always the last 100.
- A message too long for the model to read by itself is refused with an explanation, and does not use up a message.
v2.12.022 October 20263 changes
See and set how a chat background looks on a phone, and zoom in on it.
Added
- The chat background on a character's page now has a phone preview beside the wide one, so you can see which part of the picture a phone keeps before you save. Either preview can be dragged to reposition it.
- A Zoom slider for the chat background, up to 300%. It zooms in on the point you dragged to, and the chat itself is drawn at the same zoom.
Changed
- The background preview is larger, and on a narrow screen the phone preview sits centred under the wide one.
v2.11.122 October 20262 changes
Character galleries move to a page of their own, and become part of Pro.
Changed
- A character's gallery now has its own page, opened from the Gallery button on their page, so the edit form sits right under the portrait again.
- Adding pictures to a gallery, and making one a character's picture or chat background, are now part of Pro. Pictures already in a gallery stay on Free, to look at or delete.
v2.11.021 October 20263 changes
Each character can now keep a gallery of pictures and GIFs.
Added
- A character's page has a gallery that holds up to ten pictures or GIFs. Adding or deleting one saves straight away, without going through the edit form.
- Any picture in the gallery can be made the character's picture or their chat background with "Use as picture" or "Use as background". A badge on each one shows where it is in use.
Changed
- Deleting a gallery picture that is in use leaves the character's picture or background as it is, because using a picture copies it.
v2.9.017 October 20264 changes
Characters now show how they feel, and the chat shows where the story is taking place.
Added
- Each reply can carry a mood beside the character's name, such as "Curious" or "Nervous", chosen from a short list.
- The top of the chat shows the current scene, such as "The Gilded Stag, evening". It changes when the story moves somewhere else or time passes, and pressing it shows the whole of it when the screen is too narrow.
- A Chat settings menu beside the message box holds three switches: suggested replies, mood and scene. Anything switched off is not asked of the model, and disappears from the chat straight away.
Changed
- The lightbulb that switched suggested replies on and off has moved into Chat settings. A device that had suggestions off keeps them off.
v2.8.017 October 20265 changes
A reply no longer stops half-way when the connection drops while it is being written.
Changed
- A dropped connection is explained in plain words rather than with the browser's "network error".
- The installed app tries a page once more before showing the offline screen, so a reload right after waking a phone no longer lands there by mistake.
Fixed
- When the connection drops while a character is replying, for example when a phone locks or switches networks, the chat now fetches the rest of the reply and finishes it on screen, instead of stopping half-way with "network error" until the page is reloaded.
- A reply that stops arriving without an error is now noticed and finished from what was saved, so the chat no longer sits waiting forever.
- Retry is offered only when a reply really was not saved, so it no longer writes and charges a second copy of a reply that was kept.
v2.7.016 October 20263 changes
Administrators can now see what the app spends on replies, and how much OpenRouter credit is left.
Added
- A Usage page in the admin area shows replies, tokens and cost for each day of the last month, broken down by model, with the busiest accounts of the week and how many replies were read aloud.
- The admin area shows the OpenRouter credit balance, and warns when it falls below five dollars, before chats start failing for lack of credit.
Changed
- Each reply now records what it cost the app to generate, and the Privacy Policy says so.
v2.6.016 October 20263 changes
Characters now call you by a name you choose, unless you give one of them a different name.
Added
- The first time you open the app, it asks what characters should call you. It starts with your first name filled in, so one press is enough.
- Settings has a new Your name card for changing that name at any time. Every character uses the new name from their next reply.
Changed
- A character with nothing in Calls you now uses your name from Settings instead of no name at all. The empty field shows that name, so you can see what they will say.
v2.5.312 October 20263 changes
You can now edit a message you sent, or take a chat back to an earlier point.
Added
- Edit one of your own messages with the pencil under it. Saving replaces the message, removes everything said after it, and asks for a new reply.
- Rewind a chat to any turn. Everything after that turn is removed and nothing new is written.
Fixed
- Regenerating a reply no longer hides a "joined the chat" or "left the chat" notice that came after it.
v2.5.212 October 20261 change
Sending a message does less work behind the scenes.
Changed
- After a reply, the app no longer reloads the whole chat page to update the sidebar and your message count. Long chats in particular send much less data with every message.
v2.5.111 October 20264 changes
Stop now stops a reply for real, and Pro payments are answered by email.
Added
- You are emailed when your Pro payment is approved or rejected. An approval gives the dates your Pro runs between, and a rejection gives the reason when there is one.
Fixed
- Pressing Stop ends the reply where it stands. The rest is no longer written behind the scenes, and what you see after a reload is what was on screen when you stopped.
- A reply that breaks off part-way because of an error is kept as far as it got, instead of vanishing on reload, and it does not count against your messages.
- Retrying a reply that failed part-way replaces the half-written one instead of leaving it above the new one.
v2.4.010 October 20264 changes
Chats, the dashboard and the sidebar ask the database for less.
Changed
- Opening a chat fetches everything the page needs in one go, instead of in three steps one after another.
- The first reply in a new chat no longer waits for the chat to be given its title.
- The sidebar reads all of its counts with one query instead of seven, and the dashboard no longer loads each character's full instructions to draw its cards.
Fixed
- Deleting a character no longer searches every chat in the app for the lines they spoke.
v2.3.010 October 20262 changes
Characters now suggest what you might say next.
Added
- After a reply, two short suggestions appear above the message box. Choosing one writes it into the box for you to edit or send.
- The lightbulb in the message box switches suggestions off or on. The choice is kept on this device.
v2.2.410 October 20266 changes
A printed transcript now shows the characters' pictures, and a failed import leaves nothing behind.
Added
- A transcript saved as a PDF shows each character's picture, in the heading and beside every reply, so a page from the middle of a group chat still shows who is speaking.
- While several characters answer one message, "Replying 2 of 5" beside the stop button says how far the round has got.
Changed
- Importing chats is limited to thirty files a day on either plan.
- The About page opens faster, because it no longer waits to find out who is signed in.
- The framework underneath the app was updated to a version with its known security problems fixed.
Fixed
- An import that fails part-way no longer leaves a half-written chat or stray characters behind.
v2.2.39 October 20262 changes
A reply being read aloud now shows who is speaking.
Added
- While a reply is read aloud, a glow behind the character's picture swells with their voice and a few bars move beside their name, so in a group you can see who is speaking.
- The character's picture is ringed while a line is being fetched, so a press on "Read aloud" is acknowledged before the sound starts.
v2.2.29 October 20263 changes
Reading aloud becomes part of Pro, and "Spoken sentences only" moves into the chat.
Changed
- Reading a reply aloud is now part of Pro, with 10 replies a day that start again at midnight India time. Each press of play counts as one, including the same reply played again, and a line that could not be spoken is given back.
- "Spoken sentences only" is now set per chat, with the quote-mark button beside the voice under the message box. Chats with a character who had it switched on keep it on.
Removed
- The "Spoken sentences only" switch on a character's page.
v2.2.19 October 20262 changes
Long chats stay quick and keep answering.
Added
- Administrators can set how many messages a character remembers, per model, at /admin/models.
Changed
- A character now replies from the most recent 100 messages of a chat rather than all of it, so a long chat no longer slows down or stops answering. Older messages stay in the chat and in its exports.
v2.2.07 October 20263 changes
Long chats open faster, and a quoted word no longer breaks a reply's colouring.
Added
- A "Show earlier messages" button sits at the top of a long chat until the whole conversation is loaded.
Changed
- A long chat now opens on its newest 100 messages and loads earlier ones as you scroll up, keeping your place when they arrive.
Fixed
- A reply written with asterisk narration no longer loses its dialogue colouring when it quotes a single word.
v2.1.028 September 20267 changes
Character pictures you can frame, a plain background, and an adult switch that does what it says.
Added
- Framing a character's picture. Drag it into place and zoom in, and every avatar, card and chat shows it the same way. The original is kept, so you can reframe it at any time without uploading it again.
- A Plain background switch in Settings, which turns off the coloured glow behind every page and the blurred picture behind a character's header. Like the theme and the font, it is kept on each device.
Changed
- A character's picture is now changed from the portrait at the top of their page: press it, or drop an image on it, and it saves on its own. The picture field is gone from the form below.
- Marking a character as adult now also tells them, when they reply, that explicit romance is allowed. Switching it off takes effect from their next reply.
Fixed
- The picture editor fits on a phone screen, with its buttons always in reach.
- The welcome page fits in one screen at normal zoom instead of scrolling to reach the policy links.
- The notice shown in place of the message box when a chat cannot reply is centred.
v2.0.024 September 202610 changes
Free and Pro plans, paid by UPI, with one model chosen for everybody.
Added
- A Pro plan: 200 messages a day, counted afresh at midnight India time, and group chats with up to six characters. It costs ₹399 a month or ₹3,999 for twelve, bought for 1 to 12 months at a time.
- Paying for Pro by UPI from inside the app. The Pro dialog shows the UPI ID, the amount and the note to add, opens your UPI app with all three filled in on a phone, and takes the transaction ID once you have paid.
- Your plan in the sidebar and in Settings, with how many messages you have left and when Pro ends.
- For administrators: a Payments page to approve or reject Pro payments, choosing when Pro starts and for how long, and Pro status, dates, Give Pro and End Pro on the Users page.
Changed
- Free accounts get 10 messages in total, and one character per chat. Each reply a character sends counts as one message, and a reply that fails is not counted.
- Every chat now runs on one model chosen by an administrator, and every spoken line on one speech model. In a chat you choose how hard the model thinks, and on each character which voice reads it aloud.
- The Pricing link on the home page asks you to sign in first, then opens the Pro plan straight away. The pricing section below the sign-in card is gone.
- The Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Refund Policy now describe Pro as it works: paid in advance by UPI, checked by hand, never renewing on its own, and refundable in full within 7 days of approval.
Removed
- Adding an OpenRouter key of your own. Replies run on the app's key, and saved keys have been deleted.
- Choosing a model per character or per chat.
v1.9.324 September 20266 changes
A new logo, the Terms, Privacy and Refund policies, and faster pages.
Added
- The Terms of Service, Privacy Policy and Refund Policy have their own pages, linked from the home page, the sign-in card and Settings.
Changed
- Lucid Dungeon has a new logo: an open D with an L inside it. The L takes the colour of the theme you have picked, in light mode and dark.
- The name beside the logo is set in a bolder typeface of its own, and the logo no longer sits on a coloured tile.
- The browser tab icon and the installed app's icon use the new logo.
- The sign-in card shows the logo at the top.
- Pages and replies load faster, because the app now runs in Singapore beside its database.
v1.9.224 September 20263 changes
One price for Plus everywhere, and signing in again after a lost session no longer loops.
Added
- The yearly plan says what it saves: 16% on the switch, and $4.17 a month, or $9.89 a year, under the price.
Changed
- Plus has one price everywhere: $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year. The separate price for India is gone, and the switch above the plans now chooses monthly or yearly.
Fixed
- A browser whose session had ended on the server, after a ban, a deleted account or a changed secret, bounced between the dashboard and the home page forever. It now lands on the sign-in page.
v1.9.124 September 20263 changes
Add a character to your list without opening a chat with them.
Added
- An Add button on characters you do not have yet, in Shared with you, in library collections, on a shared character's page, and among the ready-made characters. It puts them in your characters and leaves you where you are, ready to chat with later or seat in a group.
Changed
- Pages load less: only the default typefaces are downloaded up front, and the others arrive when you choose one.
- The landing page header is simpler, and its "Plans" link is now called "Pricing".
v1.9.024 September 20266 changes
Chats load less, stream more smoothly, and wait on fewer database round trips.
Changed
- the chat page loads about 46 KB less JavaScript. The code highlighter is now fetched only when a message contains a code block, so in a chat with code the colouring can appear a moment after the text the first time.
- in a long chat, the messages above a reply are no longer redrawn for every word as it streams in, which keeps streaming smooth on phones and slower machines.
- each reply starts sooner, because the chat checks its model and reads its settings in one step instead of several.
- opening a chat, saving a character, and adding somebody to a chat each make fewer trips to the database.
Fixed
- two characters added to the same chat at the same moment can no longer take it past six.
- a reply and the chat's place at the top of your recent list are now saved together, so one is never recorded without the other.
v1.8.023 September 20265 changes
Sign in with Google or a one-time email code — Clerk is gone.
Added
- Google sign-in and a one-time code by email as the two ways into Lucid Dungeon, replacing Clerk entirely. There is no password anywhere in the app.
- an admin Users page (/admin/users) listing every account with its characters, chats and token usage, where an administrator can ban, unban, or delete an account.
Changed
- the sign-in card on the landing page and behind share links is now Lucid Dungeon's own form instead of a hosted widget.
Fixed
- an account deleted from Settings or by an administrator is removed in one step, with no separate cleanup pass required afterwards.
Removed
- the Clerk dependency, its dashboard, and its webhook. Existing accounts were carried over automatically, keeping every character, chat and saved key attached.
v1.7.022 September 20264 changes
Characters can be deleted from the dashboard, group chats answer to a first name, and unquoted dialogue is coloured.
Added
- Each character card on the dashboard has a delete button, which asks for confirmation before anything is removed.
Changed
- "Spoken sentences only" reads the same lines the chat colours, so it now works on replies written without quotation marks.
Fixed
- In a group chat, calling a character by their first name or surname alone now hands them the turn, instead of only their full name.
- Spoken lines are coloured in replies that put actions in asterisks and dialogue without quotation marks.
v1.6.221 September 20267 changes
Friends, chatting without a key of your own, and a group fix that had characters answering the wrong message.
Added
- Friends. Add someone by their email address at /friends, whether or not they have an account yet, and they decide. Nobody is searchable by name, so the only way to reach an account is an address you already know.
- An email to anyone you send a friend request to, with your name on it and a link to the Friends page.
- Counts in the sidebar, next to Library, Collections, Shared with you and Friends. Waiting friend requests are drawn apart from the rest, as a thing to do rather than a number.
- You can chat without saving an API key of your own. Replies run on Lucid Dungeon's key until you add one.
- Plans on the landing page, with what each allows per day and what Plus costs in India and everywhere else. Nothing is charged or counted yet.
Changed
- Saving your own API key still wins over the app's, which is what saving one is for. The Settings card now says which of the two your replies are running on.
Fixed
- In a group chat, characters answered the message before your newest one. Every line in a scene now carries the name of whoever said it, yours included, and the message being answered is kept on its own at the end where it cannot be mistaken for an older one.
v1.6.117 September 20266 changes
Sharing with particular people, an email to tell them, and a "Shared with you" section.
Added
- Share a character or collection with particular people. Enter their email addresses and the link you get works only for them, after they sign in with that address.
- Shared with you, a new section in the sidebar holding every character and collection other people have shared with you. You can take anything off your own list without asking the owner.
- An email to each person you share with, so they know it is waiting and have the link in hand.
- Admins can share a private Lucid Dungeon collection the same way, with named people rather than with everyone.
Changed
- A share link now ends when the last person comes off its list, whether you removed them or they removed it from their own list, and the collection goes back to Private.
Fixed
- Sharing something with the same person again, after they had left the list, now emails them instead of going quietly undelivered.
v1.6.017 September 20268 changes
Collections, a Character Library to find other people's characters in, and DeepSeek V4 Flash as the default model.
Added
- Collections. Group characters you have written under Your collections in the sidebar, give each a name and description, and manage them at /collections.
- The Character Library. Publish a collection and everyone signed in can find it at /library, with your account name on it or "Anonymous" if you would rather not sign it.
- Chat with anyone in a published collection. You get your own copy of the character with their greeting in place, and you keep it even if the collection is later hidden.
- Share a private collection by link. Anyone with the link can open it after signing in, until you turn the link off.
- Lucid Dungeon collections, written by the app itself and listed first in the library with an Official badge. Admins write and publish them at /admin/collections.
- The Big Bang Theory, the first Lucid Dungeon collection, ready for pictures before it is published.
Changed
- DeepSeek V4 Flash is now the default model, and every character that was on Mistral Nemo has moved to it. Mistral Nemo is switched off for now.
- Ready-made characters, including your own copies of them, cannot be added to a collection.
v1.5.217 September 20265 changes
A chat can now be read aloud in a voice of its own, and several screens sit better on a phone.
Added
- A chat can be given its own voice from the composer, for everyone in it, without changing any character's page.
Changed
- Character cards on the dashboard now show the name on the picture above the description, with Share and Chat as two equal buttons underneath.
Fixed
- The voice picker and the Export chat menu now open properly on a phone instead of sliding off the edge of the screen.
- The Cancel and Save buttons on the character form now line up neatly on a narrow screen.
- Switching between light and dark on a phone or in the installed app now starts the wipe from the button rather than from the side of the screen.
v1.5.117 September 20263 changes
Character pictures stopped loading on some devices, and the drawer stopped opening the keyboard.
Fixed
- Character pictures could stop loading on one device while working on another, and stay that way. The address a picture is served from expires, but the app was telling browsers it had not changed, so a browser kept following an address that had stopped working. Pictures now come back on their own.
- The address a picture is served from is now issued with enough life left to outlast the time a browser is allowed to remember it.
- Opening the navigation drawer on a phone no longer puts the cursor in the search field, which raised the on-screen keyboard over the list you had just opened. Tap the field to search.
v1.5.016 September 20263 changes
Deleting a character or your account now cleans up after itself, everywhere.
Added
- A "Delete account" card in Settings removes your characters, chats, share links, reports and saved OpenRouter key, then closes your account, once you type a confirmation phrase.
- A signed Clerk webhook now catches accounts deleted outside the app and cleans up the same data.
Fixed
- Deleting a character now also deletes its uploaded pictures from storage, instead of leaving them behind.
v1.4.316 September 20268 changes
Search across everything you have, and a calendar for release dates.
Added
- A search box at the top of the sidebar narrows your characters and chats as you type.
- Ctrl K, or Cmd K on a Mac, opens a search over the whole account from anywhere in the app.
- The search dialog finds characters you have written and ready-made ones you have not added yet, alongside your chats, grouped by kind.
- Search reaches chats that have fallen off the bottom of the sidebar and ones you archived, and says which is which.
- A chat can be found by the name of anyone in it, not only by its title.
- Results are moved through with the arrow keys and opened with Enter, without reaching for the mouse.
Changed
- The release date on the admin changelog form is now a calendar, and its button shows the date exactly as the About page will print it.
Fixed
- A release dated near midnight could be saved as the wrong day, depending on the time zone the form was filled in from.
v1.4.215 September 20267 changes
Eight colour themes, three more typefaces, and a light/dark switch that takes one press.
Added
- Colour themes. Eight palettes for the whole app, chosen in Settings and applied the moment you click one: Lucid, Northern Lights, Ocean Breeze, Nature, Amber, Perpetuity, Cobalt and Bubblegum. Colour is separate from brightness, so each has a light and a dark face and the choice survives switching between them.
- Three more typefaces — Outfit, Plus Jakarta Sans and Lora — alongside the three already there, bringing the Font card to six.
Changed
- Light and dark now switch on one press rather than through a menu, and the new theme is wiped in with a circle opening from the button you pressed. Where a browser cannot do that, or you have asked your system for less motion, the theme simply changes.
- The message box sits at the foot of a chat from the moment it opens, instead of starting in the middle of the window and sliding down after the first turn. Where you type no longer moves once you have found it.
- Following the system light/dark setting is still what a first visit does, but it is no longer something the toggle can return to once you have chosen for yourself.
Fixed
- On a phone, the delete button on a character's conversation list sat on top of the timestamp beside it.
- The cards in the Colour and Font pickers are all the same size now, whichever one is selected and whatever a description wraps to.
v1.4.115 September 20267 changes
Characters can be given a voice and read their replies aloud.
Added
- A voice per character. Every text-to-speech model OpenRouter offers is listed at /admin/tts with its price and its voices, and switching one on lets any character be given one of those voices on their own page.
- A play button under every reply from a character with a voice, beside Copy and Regenerate. Pressing it reads that turn aloud in their voice, on your own OpenRouter key.
- Narration is read along with the dialogue, since a reply that kept only the quoted parts would play half a scene. The markdown around it comes off first, and code blocks are skipped entirely.
Changed
- Nothing is switched on out of the box. A character with no voice simply has no play button, because every press spends credit and speech is opted into per character rather than switched off per character.
- Turning a speech model off stops the characters using it, with a message naming the character rather than reading their lines in a voice nobody chose.
Fixed
- On a phone, the delete button on a character's conversation list sat on top of the timestamp beside it. The row now reserves the width both of its buttons need.
- Publishing a release from the terminal no longer reads pnpm's own argument separator as the path to the notes file.
v1.4.014 September 20266 changes
Take a conversation out as a PDF, a spreadsheet or a file you can bring back, and a dashboard that fits a phone.
Added
- Export a conversation from its overflow menu as a PDF, as JSON, or as an Excel workbook. The PDF is the printable page your browser writes itself, so markdown, emoji and every script a character speaks come out as they look on screen.
- The workbook is three sheets — the transcript with its arrivals and departures in place and what each turn cost, the cast, and the conversation's own facts.
- Import a JSON export back from the dashboard. It carries the characters in full, so a whole conversation can move to another account; a character already yours is reused rather than duplicated.
Changed
- The dashboard's three buttons stay on one line on a phone, sharing the row equally, with their icons coming back as soon as there is room for them.
Fixed
- Signing out from the mobile drawer. The menu could be opened but not touched, so the tap on Sign out closed it having done nothing. Manage account had the same fault.
- Pages no longer start underneath the phone's status bar when the app is installed to the home screen.
v1.3.111 September 20263 changes
A roomier message box that waits in the middle of a new chat, and chat backgrounds that look right in the light theme.
Changed
- The message box is a rectangle now: you write across its full width, with the chat’s controls on a row beneath and the send button at the end of it. Clicking anywhere in the box puts the cursor in the text.
- A new chat opens with the message box in the middle of the screen, just under the character and their greeting, and it moves down to the foot once the conversation starts.
Fixed
- Chat backgrounds in the light theme fade toward white instead of turning a muddy grey, so the scene stays clear and the text over it stays readable.
v1.3.011 September 20269 changes
Choose the model and how hard it thinks for each chat, and replies no longer run out of room thinking.
Added
- Each chat has its own model picker next to the message box. Switch the whole chat onto another model, and choose how hard it thinks before replying, without changing any character’s own model.
- While a character is thinking before they reply, the chat says so — “Yuma is lost in thought…” — instead of showing typing dots. What they thought is never shown.
- A chat button beside each character in the sidebar starts a new conversation with them straight away.
- Stats for nerds show how many of a reply’s tokens went on thinking.
Changed
- Every model OpenRouter offers that answers in text is now listed at /admin/models, not only text-to-text ones — including the many that can also read images or files.
- Thinking before replying is off unless an administrator turns it on for a model. When it is on, it gets room of its own rather than eating into the reply.
Fixed
- Models that think by default could spend the whole reply length thinking and send back a reply cut short or nothing at all.
- A reply that still runs out of room while thinking is now reported, instead of disappearing without a word.
- You can scroll up while a character is replying. The transcript no longer flickers or pulls you back to the bottom.
v1.2.010 September 20264 changes
Which models this app offers is now an administrator's decision, made against OpenRouter's live catalogue.
Added
- An admin page listing every text-to-text model OpenRouter offers, with its price, context window and reply cap. Switching one on puts it in the model dropdown on every character page; the first one in the list is what a new character starts on.
- Reply length and temperature can be tuned per model from that page, rather than only from a fixed pair of numbers shared by every model.
Changed
- The model picker on the character page is a dropdown now, showing the chosen model's price and context window rather than a grid of cards.
- Turning a model off takes effect on a character's next reply, not only the next time the character is edited. The reply is refused with a clear message naming the character, never swapped to another model without saying so.
v1.1.010 September 20263 changes
Replies now read as being written rather than as arriving in bursts.
Changed
- Replies appear at a steady pace instead of in bursts. A model that sends a whole sentence at once now reads as somebody writing it, and one that trickles is no longer left crawling — and if your system asks for reduced motion, the words appear as they always did.
- The transcript follows a reply as it is written rather than jumping a line at a time, and still stops following the moment you scroll up.
- A long reply costs less to draw the longer it gets. Only the sentence currently being written is re-read, so the words keep their pace in a long chat and on a slower machine.
v1.0.06 September 202612 changes
The first stable release. Everything is quicker — pictures now come from file storage, pages ask the database for less, and long conversations stay smooth — with browser-level protections added underneath.
Added
- Standard browser protections on every page. The app can no longer be loaded inside another site's frame, and the address of a conversation is no longer handed to sites you follow a link out to.
- A ceiling on how many replies one account can generate a minute. Far above anything you can reach by using the app, and there so a stuck tab or a runaway script cannot run up cost unattended.
Changed
- Character pictures are kept in dedicated file storage now rather than inside the database, and are served from a content network close to you. They appear faster everywhere they are shown, and the pictures already uploaded were moved across.
- Opening a chat, a character, or a share link asks the database once for what it needs instead of twice. Every one of those pages opens quicker.
- The sidebar no longer reads each character's full system prompt in order to draw their name and face. Moving between pages is noticeably faster if you have written a lot of characters.
- Long conversations stay smooth as they grow. The transcript no longer redoes work proportional to its own length on every keystroke and every word that arrives.
- The ready-made character gallery no longer sends those characters' system prompts to your browser — around thirteen thousand characters of text that was never shown on the page.
- Editing a character refreshes only the chats that character is actually in, rather than every conversation you have.
- Settings totals up what you have spent using an index built for the question, so the page stays quick on an account with a long history.
Fixed
- A group chat writes its opening greetings in one go, so the room always introduces itself in seating order rather than occasionally out of it.
- Deleting a character no longer takes longer as the app grows: the tidying up afterwards now looks only at your own conversations.
- Installing a new version now retires the previous one's cached offline screen and icons, instead of leaving them in place indefinitely.
v0.1.0-beta.26 September 202612 changes
About page, admin dashboard, and the changelog is now database-driven.
Added
- Public About page at /about with the full changelog and a roadmap, accessible to signed-out visitors.
- Admin dashboard at /admin with card-based navigation showing counts for releases, roadmap items, and support reports.
- Changelog management: create, edit, and delete releases from the admin page — no redeployment needed to publish a version.
- Roadmap management: create, edit, and delete roadmap items with icon selection and position ordering.
- Support reports admin view with status filtering, kind badges, and the ability to close or reopen reports.
- Database tables for releases and roadmap items, with JSONB changes, unique version constraint, and date-based ordering.
- Reusable admin components: page header, section links, card layout, delete confirmation dialog, and release/roadmap form dialogs.
- Validation schemas for release and roadmap inputs with shared client/server enforcement.
- Seed script for the initial beta.1 changelog entry and roadmap items.
Changed
- Admin page restructured from a single page into a section-based layout with dedicated sub-pages for changelog, roadmap, and reports.
- Settings page now links to the About page for version info and changelog.
- Sidebar navigation updated with an About link.
v0.1.0-beta.16 September 202617 changes
The first public beta — everything below is what the app opened with.
Added
- Characters you write yourself: a name, a description, a picture, a greeting, and a full system prompt that sets personality, speaking style, background, and the rules of play.
- A guided builder that turns multiple-choice answers into that system prompt, with a live preview of exactly what the model will be told — and a hand-off to writing it yourself at any point.
- Eight ready-made characters in a gallery, each one click from a conversation with its greeting already in place.
- Streaming replies, rendered token by token with markdown and syntax-highlighted code, auto-scroll that yields when you scroll up, and a retry on failure.
- Group chats of up to six characters, each answering on their own model and prompt. Name somebody and they reply, or pin a speaker, or let the room take a turn without you typing.
- Many conversations per character, each renameable, deletable, and kept in full.
- An archive: put a thread away and it leaves the sidebar without losing anything, and speaking in it brings it back on its own.
- Character pictures, downscaled in the browser before upload and served from an owner-scoped endpoint.
- Chat backgrounds: a picture behind a one-to-one transcript, with its strength, blur, and framing yours to set and previewed live against real messages.
- Share a character by unguessable link. The recipient sees who they are before signing in, and one press adds their own copy.
- Bring your own OpenRouter key, encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM and never sent to the browser.
- A model per character, chosen from a server-side allowlist with no fallback outside it.
- An NSFW mark that badges a character wherever they appear and travels with a share link. A label only — it changes nothing about how a reply is generated.
- Stats for nerds: tokens, time taken, tokens per second, and the model under every reply, totalled per account and per model in Settings.
- Report an issue from Settings or straight from an error screen, with the version, page, and browser filled in for you, and the reply visible where you filed it.
- Light, dark, and system themes, and a choice of sans, serif, or mono for the whole app.
- Installable as an app, with an offline screen instead of the browser's error page when the connection drops.
Roadmap
Planned and being worked on. None of it is in the app yet — nothing on this list can be used today.
Chat through a Telegram botPlanned
Carry on the same conversations from Telegram, so a character is reachable without opening the app.
Invite real people to chatPlanned
Bring somebody you know into a thread alongside the characters, so a room can hold both.
Multiple languagesPlanned
Read the app and talk to a character in your own language, not only in English.
